I began training at Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 14, a freshman in high school. I began training at Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 14, a freshman in high school. I originally began training because of aspirations to join the U.S. Army as part of their 75th Ranger Regiment, and, frankly, didn't want to die. So I figured I had better get up to speed in hand to hand combat, knowing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the single most effective martial art. What I didn't realize at the time was how out of touch with reality I was. My first day in class, I was the shiest I had ever been and didn't even look anyone in the eye. This wasn't abnormal of my demeanor at the time. Since then, I have received more compliments than I can count on my ability to shake hands, look someone in the eye, and have an intelligent conversation with an adult. A few weeks ago, I surprised myself. There was a parent sitting in the bleachers who was introducing his sons to Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu, both around the same age I was when I had started. Without thinking, I was on my way to shake hands with him, introducing myself, and asking what brought him in. Looking back on that interaction, I realized it would've been the last thing I wanted to do when I was 14. I initially joined Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu to learn the art of BJJ, of which you will find unrivaled instruction in the entire Greater Sacramento area, and defend myself had the need ever arise. 1 year in and I realized it was the first thing I had ever committed to for that long. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is what drew me in, but the community is why I stayed. Now, 4 years in, I can't imagine my life without jiu-jitsu. When I type jiu-jitsu, I don't only mean the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but the community I found by being here. I found Ryan Rich, Christie Zelnik, Christopher Kronkright, Ken Kuykendall, John Blazevic, Tim Friese, Boston, Barrett, Canyon, Frank, Lindsay, Big Mike, along with a slew of other individuals and training partners. These people have shaped me into the person I am today. Although my life's mission has changed direction since I joined GBJJ, I accredit jiu-jitsu to be the single most defining reason behind my developing personal and professional success. This community should be regarded as a national treasure. Whether you are looking to enroll your kids for character development, leadership development, and overall more confidence (of which jiu-jitsu has given me plenty), or you're a teenager looking for a new hobby to enjoy (there are plenty of us here, and growing by the month), or you're in your early/late 20s, or a parent yourself (most of the individuals I named above have families themselves), you will be bettered by your involvement in Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu. Everyone would. I have never once written a review. This one has been a long time coming. I have never experienced, nor heard of, any other community positively impacting as many lives as Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu has. These people are my family. Less
Coach Ryan is an amazing coach!! My son get super excited going every day ! He has grown so much in the past 6 months . We are very grateful for the coaches and the volunteers ! Thank you so much keep up the good work!!
An absolutely wonderful Jiu-Jitsu gym for my Son. Coach Ryan has such a unique and awesome way of teaching that makes new kids feel so welcomed and pushes the experienced kids to get better.
Fantastic experience for my kiddo, instructors are fun and the kids learn a ton from them.
All the instructors are great! The kids learn a lot and have a lot of fun. Would definitely recommend!

The only time I was dissatisfied is when my sons 1st stripe fell off in the wash and for one week he was kinda brushed off by Coach Ryan about having a new one put on. We ended up moving and unfortunately my son never got his stripe back. I also thought that there could be more thorough training on the techniques when they practiced, as my son sometimes struggled with understanding or remembering what and how he should physically construct himself. The Gracie family in general, however, is providing a very valuable service to these kids in their method of teaching. The age groups and pairings seem appropriate and they keep it fun. I would recommend it to anyone. 😊 Less
My 8 year old son loves this place. He thinks coach Ryan is the best. Ryan is so great with the kids and is very funny. We live in Folsom and the drive is worth it.
My kids have been attending GB Jiu-Jitsu for the past several years. They love it, coach Ryan is fenomenal. Your kids MUST try this sport,. Kids need to learn self-defense nowadays, it is not an option anymore. This is the best place!
Great coaches, awesome environment. Our kid is loving his time at Jiu-Jitsu. He has learned valuable life-long tools while practicing this art. Very thankful to have joined the team. We highly recommend it. Especially if your kiddo likes to wrestle.
Joining GB Jiu-Jistu has been the best gift I've given to myself in the last 15 years. The instructors are top notch, there are no egos on the mat, which has made joining at 45 years old and without any previous training, a phenomenal experience. Thank you gents!
It is very cool, amazing, and awesome because I have a really cool coach -Ryan that teaches me cool moves -Austin B

Ryan's method for directing young kids is so on point. He is stern but still approachable. My son loves coming to class and learned so much in the short time he's been here, so far.
Great place, my daughter loves coming. She has a great relationship with the staff.

She was experiencing a lot of social issues on and off campus and other factors that impacted her learning and focus. Going into her first class at Granite Bay she was experiencing so much anxiety she was on the verge of tears. On the flip side, she wanted so badly to try something new. Coach Ryan was so patient and by the end of the class had gotten her to participate. That night she fell in love with something that changed her whole world. Her focus has improved, anxiety has lessened and where she was struggling to sleep, she is now passing out and getting a full nights rest. Her interactions with her peers are becoming more positive and her grades have improved exponentially. The Gomez family can’t begin to express how much Coach Ryan and others at Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu mean to us! Less
Great coaching, great culture. Brand new to jiu jitsu and everyone makes you feel welcomed and comfortable. Coach Ryan does a good job of keeping an eye on everyone while drilling moves to make sure everyone’s got it or to help you adjust so you’re doing the moves right. Higher belts take the time to give you pointers and encourage you. Highly highly recommend, dive on in!
Granite bay jiu-jitsu is a wonderful business. I have watched my daughter grow in confidence and work ethic over the last year. Coaches are patient, attentive, fun and the best role models to all the kids who attend. Unlike any martial art gym we have been to before. Love them!
Great place! Everyone is friendly! Great for all skill sets. All of the coaches are excellent. Coach Ryan is 2nd to none with how he trains and coaches children. My two kids loved all of the coaches especially coach Ryan.
It is a fun place to train. Coach Ryan knows what he is doing and demonstrates a deep knowledge when he shows a new technique. For adults you are allowed to go to any of the adult practices. This was very convenient when I wouldn't be able to make an afternoon session the night session was always there. It was nice that they alternated Gi and no-Gi days so that you can keep training both easily.
We LOVE Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu! They are THE BEST! My boys have learned a ton-from Jujitsu moves to character building. Coach Ryan and his team are extremely good at what they do and my sons love to go to Jiu-Jitsu and return home with increased strength, skill, confidence.

Being put on the spot, or when all the attention is on my son, is really hard on him and he shuts down. After one episode of him panicking when he had to introduce himself, he is now able to introduce himself no problem and was proud of himself for being able to do so, after encouragement from Coach Ryan. He LOVES going to jiu jitsu and is so excited when I get home every day to take him. Coach Ryan is amazing with the kids, I'm very glad we signed up. 😊 Less

Ryan is highly-respected among his expert peers and sought after by experienced practitioners. Hence, the studio is always teeming with amazing highly-skilled players who don’t hesitate to help and teach. You’re constantly challenged and learning. - The atmosphere welcomes all who wish to learn in a friendly, safe, and respectful environment for all ages, genders, and physical capabilities. - Ryan and his coaching staff seek to understand the needs and learning style of each and every student, and do their best to tailor their approach accordingly. Despite his Jiu-Jitsu lineage and ability, Ryan himself is constantly seeking to grow and learn, and is always analyzing and innovating on ways to ensure that we learn valuable and applicable technique. On a personal level, I have have a great deal of respect and trust for Ryan. Besides developing such a solid Jiu-Jitsu ability in less than 1.5 years, my daughter is gaining life skills, responsibility, and a strong sense of confidence, assertiveness, and love for herself and her community. This is a bonus for me, in addition to my own journey during which I I have come to love Jiu-Jitsu and expect it to be my passion for the rest of my life. No matter where our lives take us, Ryan and Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu will always be our family. Less
Great place to train and learn. Ryan is excellent and the whole gym is very friendly. A family friendly and welcoming atmosphere. 5 stars isn't enough.

The facility is excellent, and incredibly well thought out. Ryan has established a shoe and bear feet policy, on top of an almost OCD cleaning routine, that ensures a clean gym. The mat space is ample, with padded walls, allowing for non stop action without fear of knocking heads with other training partners, even in the craziest of scrambles. The instruction is some of the best and most innovative in the region. Ryan, the owner and head instructor, was trained in a den of savages, but he has civilized what he has learned and is able to break even the most complex of moves down in a way that is clear and easy to understand.
