I was offered ADR from other surgeons due to my age, but Dr. Callewart pointed out that my issue was due to too much movement when bending over. I knew he was spot on because I used to explain that to other surgeons and they just could not effectively answer why I would have severe pain shooting up my spine laying down after that. This was just the start of knowing I wanted to go with Dr. Callewart. Next, came insurance and we all know how they try to do anything to avoid spine surgeries. After meeting criteria, we had an OBGYN who hasn’t practiced medicine in over a decade trying to give Dr. Callewart a true expert a hard time even though this guy had several surgical referrals and opinions on this. He was indicating he was not going to approve it even though the criteria has been met, so Dr. Callewart who also helps patients fight insurance companies in Texas with getting fair evaluations in these situations informed them of that law that was not being followed, and instantly approved the surgery. Sad that it had to come to this, but I also don’t know another surgeon that would fight like this for his patients. He had to fight more with prescriptions I needed to be discharged so this was definitely above and beyond any ones standards of care. The first week or so after surgery was definitely challenging, and I didn’t sleep very well due to the uncomfortable pain being in positions my back didn’t like, but after that I definitely noticed a difference right away. The nerve issues I was having was essentially gone right after surgery and I only get nerve pain now if I overdue it. Recovery is not going to happen over night but I have been fairly comfortable and was able to start doing work and things more freely around 2-3 weeks after surgery and it seems like it’s continuing to progress. I have bad days still, but it’s just apart of the process but I’m forever grateful for Dr. Callewart fighting for me as well as giving me my life back thus far. I can’t wait to continue progressing and get back into doing athletic things again. I cannot praise him enough for his talent and ability. I’ll forever be in his debt and would vouch for him all day everyday as one the of the best surgeons in Dallas and likely the world. If you have spine problems, this is the man to see as he is the full package that cares for you before and after the surgery. I have been going to Dr. Callewart since 2015 or longer. What I love the most about him, is that he will not operate until every other option has been exhausted. He's straightforward and doesn't try to sugarcoat or dance around your issues. He operated on my lower back in 2016 and it went great. I went back to see him in December 2020 regarding neck and upper back pain, although due to my insurance, he wasn't on my plan in 2021. In 2021 I went to physical therapy, and pain management and I received two injections that were not helpful. Afterward, I chose to deal with the pain and wait for Dr. Callewart to be covered under my insurance again in 2022. In January 2022, I tripped and fell headfirst into a wall, and I had pain shooting down my arm. I went to see Dr. Callewart, he did x-rays in the office and sent me for an MRI. When I went back for my MRI results, I had a disc prolapse C4-5 with herniation at C5-6 that was pushing on my throat and spine. Dr. Callewart said, there was no other option, we must operate. I didn't bat an eye, I trust this man 100% and whatever he says, is what I will do when it comes to my neck and back. On Wednesday 3/16/22 I had an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion on C4-5 & C5-6, I was off pain meds and able to work from home the following Monday, and I was back in the office the following week! I wasn’t blessed with the best genetics by far, only being 45 and being told I have a back of an 80-year-old, is challenging at times. Dr. Callewart has been my saving grace. I have told so many people about Dr. Callewart and I’ve watched some of them be stubborn and go elsewhere, to this day they are still in pain and going back to have even more surgeries by other doctors. Symptoms led me seeking surgical advice. My surgery by Dr. Callewart involved C-3 through T1 with plates, screws and some spurs taken off the back of my neck which he helped avoid an additional 2nd surgery for 2022. Last year in 2020, despite all the covid and periodical shutdowns of surgery by CDC, I had consulted 3 surgeon opinion's last year. One surgeon was a 5-star rating from my insurance company. That surgeon had put me off another year without follow-up. I was confused by his statements, and I was not thoroughly explained the truth of my condition.~ Just some advice to take note to be cautious on who your insurance rates as a 5-star surgeon. At this point, I had no conclusion on whether I was to need surgery or not. Even though I was put off a year by one surgeon and symptoms had deteriorated to a critical position; I am so thankful I found Dr. Callewart who knew exactly what to do. It was GOD WHO led me to find Dr. Callewart . And it was GOD WHO spoke to my heart in every step to get things lined up in preparation for this surgery. Dr. Callewart saw my previous procedure in the MRI done by Dr. Bland in 88'. And he also personally knew Dr. Bland! That was very reassuring. I knew I could trust Dr. Callewart. It's been 2 weeks since my surgery. I am definitely able to breathe better and at night. I no longer have sharp pains in my neck like knives. I am able to think more clearly. The right hip procedure to obtain bone marrow applied to my neck, the hip incision was easier to heal than I expected. I walked that evening after recovery. I am now off my walker. I can take my neck brace off except to go for a walk in my neighborhood and ride as a passenger in the car. I can take my own shower standing now with a strong suction balance bar. At 1.5 weeks, I now take one pain pill instead of two. This helped me function better in thinking to give myself my own meds. I am able to swallow a little more than soft foods for now. I will be able to drive once I have mobility of my neck. I am presently healing on the nerves of my right 2 fingers. I have 2 physical therapists visiting 4x a week. And I am working up to lifting 20 lbs. Also, since I live alone, I personally hired custodial help for 1.5 weeks (in which insurance does not cover). I chose a girlfriend referral of a girlfriend who was a believer and a "willing vessel" to sleep over and she had helped me with my pain meds 24/7, and took med documentation. She also cooked, did dishes, laundry, mail, groceries, make vitamin smoothies, and helped me shower, etc.. I paid her well because I wanted to expedite my healing. And I'm glad I did, it was a big help. Also, I had another friend pick up a fine pill crusher mixed with applesauce to allow easier swallowing. I asked another friend to help coordinate meals brought from various friends every 2-3 days; friends who cleaned my house, and took me to appointments. I appreciate Dr. Callewart because he listens to his patients, he takes notes of everything, and he is professional and confident in what he is doing. I am so very happy I had this procedure done by Dr. Callewart. I only wished I had known about him last year to prevent further procedures, although I am deeply grateful to GOD for the other surgeon to have put me off so this procedure was done precisely by Dr. Callewart. Never in my life have I dealt with such a shallow person let alone a doctor, he made promises to my husband that he obviously was wrong about and here we are 8 months into it and having to find another doctor to help my husband. I have had 2 surgeries by Dr Callewart. The last one was 3 years ago. He gave me a good part of my life back. I will always have mobility and loss of motion issues but my quality of life is good. I had surgery previously and this antibiotic was used with no problem, however the second time it was used I went into anaphylactic shock and woke up in ICU.
