As temperatures drop, it is important to winterize your outdoor faucets (hose bibs) to avoid major plumbing issues.
Here is what can happen if you do not winterize — and how to do it properly:
Water left inside your outdoor faucet and pipes can freeze.
When water freezes, it expands, putting pressure inside the pipe.
This can cause the pipe to crack or burst, often inside your walls or basement.
Burst pipes can lead to serious water damage, expensive repairs, and even mold growth.
Often, you will not know there is a problem until it is too late.
Step 1: Disconnect All Hoses
Remove any garden hoses or attachments from the outdoor faucet.
Store hoses indoors to prevent damage.
Step 2: Shut Off the Inside Water Supply
Find the indoor shut-off valve that controls your outdoor faucet.
Turn the valve completely off.
Step 3: Open the Hose Bib Outside
Go outside and turn on the faucet to drain any remaining water.
Leave the faucet open during the winter to allow any pressure to escape.
Step 4: (OptiImageonal) Install an Outdoor Faucet Cover
For extra protection, place an insulated cover over the hose bib.
These covers are affordable and help protect against deep freezes.
