1. Check Other Faucets

First, test hot water in multiple places. Try your kitchen sink, bathroom, and tub. If no hot water is coming from any faucet, the problem is likely with the water heater itself. If only one fixture is affected, you may be dealing with a local valve issue or a clogged line.

2. Identify the Type of Water Heater You Have

There are two main types:

  • Gas water heater: Runs on natural gas or propane

  • Electric water heater: Powered by electricity and usually has a large tank

Look for a label on the tank or check for a pilot light or an electrical disconnect switch nearby.

3. If You Have a Gas Water Heater

  • Check the pilot light. If it is out, relighting it might restore hot water. Many newer models have a reset button or an igniter built in.

  • Check the gas valve. Make sure it is in the ON position.

  • Smell for gas. If you detect a strong gas odor, leave the area and call the gas company or fire department right away.

4. If You Have an Electric Water Heater

  • Check the circuit breaker. Look in your panel for a tripped breaker. If you find one, flip it off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.

  • Press the reset button. Most electric water heaters have a red reset button behind the upper access panel. Pressing this may restore function.

5. Check for Leaks or Flooding Around the Unit

If you see water pooling at the base of the heater or signs of corrosion on the tank, the unit may have failed. In this case, do not try to turn it back on. Call a licensed plumber right away.

6. Consider the Age of Your Water Heater

Most water heaters last 8 to 12 years. If yours is older than that, the failure could be due to age. Sometimes the most cost-effective solution is to replace it, especially if it is inefficient or starting to show rust.
