Evidence on Fit Notes and the Impact of Long-Term Absence on Returning to Work

Research shows that the longer an individual remains off work due to illness, the harder it becomes for them to return to work successfully. Fit notes (Statements of Fitness for Work) were introduced in the UK in 2010 to encourage a more supportive and flexible approach to managing sickness absence and improving return-to-work outcomes.

Longer Absence Reduces the Likelihood of Returning to Work

According to the UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), individuals who are off work for 4 to 6 weeks have only about a 50% chance of returning to work successfully.

After 6 months of absence, the chances of returning to work decrease to less than 20%.

If a person is off work for a year, the probability of returning to work drops to less than 10%.
