A new tradition is taking root in Emporia, "The Howe Hoist." Inspired by the legacy of Richard Howe, a local stone mason whose artistry shaped the foundations of our community, this rock-lifting competition is set to become a celebration of strength and community pride.
A true artisan, Richard Howe, dedicated his life to the meticulous craft of stone masonry. His works stand as a testament to his skill and dedication. A Welsh immigrant who immigrated to Emporia, Howe's work became an integral part of the city's identity, shaping the landscape with enduring beauty. Some of the buildings that he worked on included the first Lyon County Court House; the first building at the Kansas Normal School (now ESU, “Sunken Garden” site of building’s foundation); the iconic Chase County Court House; Indian stone houses at Kaw Mission in Council Grove; and numerous others.
To honor Richard Howe's indelible mark on Emporia and the surrounding area, Good Muscle and Visit Emporia have come together to create "The Howe Hoist." This personal challenge, inspired by Howe's strength and precision in lifting and placing stones, aims to showcase the enduring spirit of craftsmanship and pay homage to a local icon.
The Howe Hoist will be held in conjunction with the May 5th Good Way Gardens event at the Howe House (315 E Logan St), Good Way Gardens is a sustainable arts organization producing concerts and festival-style events in outdoor spaces with educational and entertainment opportunities for all ages.
Participants must select one of four rocks to lift (100, 200, 250, or 300 lbs.). Competitors will be allowed 2 chances to make a successful lift by bringing the rock from the ground and placing it upon a stone pedestal. A successful lift will earn the lifter's name a place in the Howe Hoist registry. It is $10 to participate, and a portion of the proceeds will go to Good Way Gardens to support their mission of creating a connection to Earth and a culture of sustainability in Emporia.
Whether you're a seasoned lifter or simply want to test yourself with a unique challenge, "The Howe Hoist" invites everyone to come together for a day of celebration, competition, and community spirit."
