Project Manager Training — Concrete Phase

Class 1 of 4 — Pre-Concrete Preparation & Procurement

Purpose:


Understand design intent, verify structural requirements, and build a reliable cost + scheduling plan before ordering materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Study all structural details

  • Build a fully vetted material and labor scope

  • Confirm PSI & mix design requirements (e.g., 2500 PSI / 5 sack)

  • Establish schedule & inspection plan

  • Document existing conditions before build begins

Action Items

  • ✅ Confirm dimensions, rebar spacing, slab thickness, slope requirements

  • ✅ Add all products and pricing to the budget with 5% contingency

  • ✅ Enter every vendor & contact into the Sub Bid Sheet

  • ✅ Verify plan for city inspections + which trades trigger inspection

  • ✅ Upload before photos (grade prep, utilities, penetrations)

Class 2 of 4 — Ordering Materials & Equipment Coordination

Purpose:


Time orders, secure logistics, and prepare the installer to execute efficiently without delays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prevent wasted labor from early deliveries

  • Confirm that nothing is missing before pour day

  • Document & track every receipt and detail change

  • Plan for unexpected shortages or traffic / access issues

Action Items

  • ✅ Schedule Concrete Truck + Concrete Pump arrival windows

  • ✅ Confirm staging area for rebar, forms, embeds, and hardware

  • ✅ Provide installers with your materials list for verification

  • ✅ Add update notes to onsite printed plans as changes occur

  • ✅ Keep plastic and curing protection onsite for emergency weather

  • ✅ Prepare a Backup Supplier List for supply disruption

Class 3 of 4 — One Week Before Pour Day

Purpose:


Lock in schedule, confirm safety & accessibility, and eliminate obstacles that could delay the pour.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify all under-slab systems are installed & inspected

  • Confirm team, drivers, inspectors are aligned

  • Finalize hardware, embed locations, and anchor bolt plans

  • Prepare homeowners and neighborhood for concrete delivery

Action Items

  • ✅ Confirm permit greenlights + inspection readiness checklist

  • ✅ Verify concrete strength, quantity, and slumps ordered

  • ✅ Confirm embed locations: anchor bolts, straps, sleeves, conduits

  • ✅ Provide location for pump truck washout & cleanup

  • ✅ Stage No Parking signs around site for the day prior

  • ✅ Validate expansion joint layout with homeowner sign-off

  • ✅ Set up water hose connection for finishing crew

Class 4 of 4 — Pour Day, Close-Out & Verification

Purpose:


Ensure proper installation, finish quality, cleanup, documentation, and accurate elevations before moving forward.

Pour Day Action Items

  • ✅ Walk elevations with installer — verify forms, line, and grade

  • ✅ Mark off slab & paths with caution tape

  • ✅ Reinforce timeline expectations: no delays

  • ✅ Keep dispatcher’s number ready for additional yardage

  • ✅ Confirm inspection call + timing responsibility

Close-Out Action Items

  • ✅ Blue Tape walk — punch list documented with photos

  • ✅ Check for concrete splatter on structure — remove immediately

  • ✅ Confirm:

    • ✔ Elevations shot + recorded

    • ✔ Foundation square & plumb

    • ✔ Surfaces finished to spec

    • ✔ Site cleaned & formwork removed

  • ✅ Conduct final client walk & satisfaction acknowledgment

  • ✅ Update budget + confirm office close-out

  • ✅ Schedule follow-up work (sawcuts, curing checks, etc.)

  • ✅ Celebrate team performance 🎉
