Drywall Master Class

DRYWALL — SELECTION AWARENESS GUIDE

Choosing Drywall Subcontractors

Think About:

  • Do they handle all phases?
Hanging → Taping → Texture → Sanding → Sound sealing

  • Experience with smooth wall and higher finish levels (4–5)?

  • Coordination with MEP rough-in, framing, and air sealing

  • Do they include soundproof systems if required?

Subs to Select:

  • Drywall hanging subcontractor

  • Taping & texture subcontractor (if separate)

  • Sound control installer (Green Glue / acoustic caulk)

  • Fire-stopping subcontractor (sometimes separate)

Pick subs who understand luxury home finish expectations.

Choosing Drywall Materials

Think About:

  • Proper moisture + mold resistance (bathrooms, basements)

  • High-impact boards for high-traffic areas

  • Sound and privacy performance

  • Fire rating requirements at:

    • Garages

    • Stair enclosures

    • Shared walls

Materials to Select (as applicable):
Board Types:

  • Standard gypsum board

  • Moisture-resistant board (MR / “green board”)

  • Mold-resistant board (purple board)

  • Cement board (tile backer)

  • Type X fire-rated board

  • Sound-damping board (QuietRock)

Joint + Texture Materials:

  • Joint compound (All-Purpose / Topping)

  • Corner bead (metal/plastic)

  • Acoustic sealant

  • Texture materials:

    • Smooth wall (Level 4–5)

    • Knockdown

    • Orange peel

Accessories:

  • Fasteners (screws/proper length)

  • Drywall backing & fire-blocking where needed

Quality boards prevent cracking + callbacks later.

Choosing Tools, Equipment & Rentals

Think About:

  • Wall height — need scaffolding?

  • Dust control to protect finished items

Tools & Equipment to Select:

  • Drywall lifts / panel jacks

  • Taping tools (automatic systems)

  • Sanding poles + power sanders

  • Dust collection + air scrubbers

  • LED temp lighting (for spotting imperfections)

Finishing tools determine final appearance.

Choosing Vendors & Supply Sources

Think About:

  • Delivery → can they place sheetrock inside levels?

  • Consistent texture and joint compounds

Vendor Types:

  • Drywall distributors

  • Texture finish suppliers

  • Acoustic insulation suppliers

  • Delivery crews with mechanical lifts

Vendor capability = labor savings.
