The Contractor Checklist

Electrical Master Class

Project Manager Training — Electrical Phase

Class 1 of 7 — Lighting Design & Approval Coordination

Purpose:
Ensure electrical layout enhances lifestyle, efficiency, and safety — not just meets code.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and homeowner finalize lighting plan

  • Confirm:

    • Fixture style + finish + lumen output

    • Controls / switches / dimming strategy

    • Specialty circuits (EV charging, hot tub, heat tape, smart home)

Action Items

  • ✅ Complete Lighting Intent Review:

    • “How do you use each room from morning to night?”

  • ✅ Confirm accent lighting: stairs, art walls, cabinetry, mirrors

  • ✅ Capture homeowner sign-off on Purchase Order Sheet

  • ✅ Upload all fixture spec sheets to Detail Page

Class 2 of 7 — Material Take-Off & Procurement Strategy

Purpose:
Order the right items and avoid electrical delays — #1 cause of schedule stalls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Separate material list into:

    • Rough-in components (boxes, wire, cans)

    • Finish fixtures (pendants, sconce kits, trims)

  • Confirm lead times for custom fixtures

Action Items

  • ✅ Electrician reviews fixture list and corrects SKU mistakes

  • ✅ Document all receipts in Expensify → attach supplier invoices

  • ✅ Register warranties — link records to Homeowner Manual

  • ✅ Back-up supplier list created for last-minute fixtures

PM Tip:

Order trim kits and specialty housings before drywall — not during finish phase.

Class 3 of 7 — One-Week-Out Field Verification

Purpose:
Ensure all substrate and trade sequences support a clean rough-in.

Key Responsibilities

  • Confirm schedule is locked

  • Verify plumbing, HVAC, windows complete → avoid conflicts

  • Finalize inspection calendar

Action Items

  • ✅ Stage fixture boxes + trims → protected storage

  • ✅ Confirm exterior weather-proofing behind fixture penetrations

  • ✅ Test GFCI/AFCI plans in panel layout before installation

  • ✅ Set garbage handling plan (wire scrap gets out of walk paths)

💡 Safety note:
Falls, shock, and wiring hazards must be pre-mitigated.

Class 4 of 7 — Rough-In Day: Circuit Verification & Safety

Purpose:
Guarantee power distribution and safety routing meet code & homeowner needs.

Field Responsibilities

  • ✅ Walk home with electrician and homeowner

    • Confirm switch locations at human reach

    • Confirm outlet counts + heights per room use

  • ✅ Validate specialty requirements:

    • Heated floors

    • Under-cabinet lighting

    • Smart home device power

    • Low-voltage wiring paths

  • ✅ First-day routing decisions eliminate rework

Documentation

  • ✅ Label every circuit before panel cover closes

  • ✅ Photograph wire routing before drywall — upload to Homeowner Manual

Class 5 of 7 — Rough-In Close-Out & Inspection Completion

Purpose:
Protect the schedule — electrical inspections can break timelines.

Action Items

  • ✅ Blue tape corrections → label locations by circuit + room

  • ✅ Confirm:

    • Rough Electrical Inspection ✅

    • Smoke/CO device plan approved ✅

    • Panel labeling complete ✅

  • ✅ Confirm attic + crawl electrical protected from damage

  • ✅ Office confirmation required before payment release

⚠️ No wires should be floating, crushed, or exposed.

Class 6 of 7 — Final Electrical: Fixture Install & System Commissioning

Purpose:
Achieve clean finish aesthetics and full system functionality.

Field Responsibilities

  • ✅ Confirm ALL finish fixtures are onsite + undamaged

  • ✅ Align switch trim + screw slot orientation

  • ✅ GFCI, ARC fault breakers tested and recorded

  • ✅ All lights programmed & labeled

  • ✅ Confirm fan direction + airflow settings correct

  • ✅ Test exterior lighting after dark

Class 7 of 7 — Electrical Close-Out, Owner Training & Payment

Purpose:
Deliver a fully functional and well-documented electrical system.

Close-Out Checklist

  • ✅ Final inspection passed

  • ✅ Detailed punch list completed

  • ✅ No wall damage or patching required after fixture install

  • ✅ Homeowner walkthrough:

    • Smart switches

    • Panel labeling

    • Exterior lighting controls
