My car is a "key in switch" start

Battery dead - no lights nothing when in the start postiion from the ignition switch

Car wouldn't start/ but does turn over/ does "crank" OK: This means the engine is making starting noises "ru ru ru ru ru ru ru ru" but wont "fire up and run when you stop twIsting the key to the start position.
